Handbook of Pathophysiology

Handbook of Pathophysiology

Review:

Great little book, must have in your med-surg rotation
Gives pathophysiology, complications, signs and symptoms, diagnostic tests used to identify the problem, treatment, and special age-alerts that explains age related problems from pediatric to elderly. Great diagrams and charts that compare similar or often confused illnesses (such as Hepatitis A, B, C, D, & E; tells incubation time, onset, age group most affected, transmission, severity, prognosis, & progression to chronicity). Nice black and white illustrations plus 16 pages of color illustrations. Chapters are (1) Fundamentals of Pathophysiology, (2) Cancer, (3) Infection, (4) Genetics, (5) Fluids and Electrolytes, (6) Cardiovascular System, (7) Respiratory System, (8) Nervous System, (9) Gastrointestinal System, (10) Musculoskeletal System (11) Hematologic System, (12) Immune System, (13) Endocrine System, (14) Renal System, (15) Sensory System, (16) Integumentary System, (17) Reproductive System plus an appendix of less common disorders and their causes, pathophysiology, and sign and symptoms. All this in a small, easy to carry, size. The leather cover keeps it as nice as a hard cover book. This is one of my best buys in nursing school.

Astrocytes in (Patho)Physiology of the Nervous System

Astrocytes in (Patho)Physiology of the Nervous System

  • Number Of Pages: 700

  • Publication Date: 2008-11-28

  • ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0387794913

  • ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780387794914

  • Binding: Hardcover

Product Description:

The goal of this book is to integrate information that has accumulated in recent years revealing the active role of astrocytes in physiological processing in the central nervous system and to use this as a basis for identifying pathological roles for these glial cells in the brain. Astrocytes, a subtype of glial cell, have long been neglected as active participants in intercellular communication and information processing in the central nervous system, in part due to their lack of the electrical excitability. However, astrocytes possess a diverse assortment of ion channels, neurotransmitter receptors, and transport mechanisms that enable astrocytes to respond to many of the same signals that act on neurons.
Since astrocytes can detect chemical transmitters that are released from neurons and can release extracellular signals, there is an increasing awareness that they play physiological roles in regulating neuronal activity and synaptic transmission. Astrocytes also play critical roles during pathophysiological states of the nervous system.

Angiogenesis in Inflammation: Mechanisms and Clinical Correlates

Angiogenesis in Inflammation: Mechanisms and Clinical Correlates
(Progress in Inflammation Research)
By Michael P. Seed, David A. Walsh

  • Publication Date: 2008-09-25

  • ISBN-10 / ASIN: 3764376260

  • ISBN-13 / EAN: 9783764376260

  • Binding: Hardcover

Product Description:

Angiogenesis is an essential component of inflammation and its resolution. This volume provides up-to-date information on the latest developments in the pathology, mechanisms and therapy of angiogenesis dependent inflammatory disease. Recent years have seen large advances in angiogenesis research, especially in oncology. Traditionally mechanisms in inflammation angiogenesis were inferred from tumour angiogenesis, however recent research has matured highlighting the similarities and dissimilarities between these processes. This volume relates the lessons learned from tumour biology applied to inflammation.

Angiogenesis in Inflammation: Mechanisms and Clinical Correlates develops current knowledge on the mechanisms at the molecular and cellular levels as they relate to inflammation, including acute and chronic inflammation, neurogenic initiation, and the role of the multiple cellular components that comprise inflammation: granulocytes, macrophages, fibroblasts, dendritic cells and lymphocytes. This is related to inflammatory diseases: not only the familiar angiogenesis dependent diseases of rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis, but also loci such as the lung, gastric ulcers, the eye with uveitis, wound healing and periodontal disease and their therapy. The book shows how this knowledge may be used in the discovery of novel therapeutics. It brings together experts in each of these fields to link the molecular and cellular processes in angiogenesis to those of inflammation and disease, culminating in a discourse on areas for future therapies.

Matrix Metalloproteinases in Tissue Remodelling and Inflammation

Matrix Metalloproteinases in Tissue Remodelling and Inflammation

Publisher: Birkhäuser Basel
Number Of Pages: 168
Publication Date: 2008-10
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 3764385847
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9783764385842
Binding: Hardcover

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are proteolytic enzymes believed to be involved in many physiological and pathological processes associated with inflammatory reactions. MMP synthesis and functions are regulated by three major mechanisms including transcriptional activation, post-transcriptional processing, and control of activity by tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs). Many cell types have been identified as producers of MMPs and TIMPs in a context of inflammatory processes. MMPs are involved in numerous inflammatory diseases, including respiratory, cardiovascular and central nervous system pathologies.
This volume presents new advances in the involvement of MMPs in various diseases associated with inflammatory processes. Moreover, the recent development of selective and non selective inhibitors of MMPs provides new insights in the relationship between activation of inflammatory cells and tissue remodelling and advises new therapeutic possibilities for the treatment of inflammatory diseases.
